WAHOO (Acanthocybium solandri) "Wahoo", said the fisherman when the fish took the lure. The Wahoo have a fast surface run and strike on lures, bait and sometimes on swivel leaders. The Wahoo lives in schools near reefs and submarine peaks. This fish is a very good fighter, especially in light tackle (30 or 20 lbs.), and prefers warm water. In El Hierro the Wahoo is caught all over the year. Just to give you a little impression about the quantity of this species: The fishermen of La Restinga caught about 18 tons between the years 1987 and 1993. The very best time to catch this fish is during the summer months from June to October, but also in the beginning of January. If you join us in this time of the year, the chance to break the current record is rather big! OILFISH (Ruvetus Pretosius) and ESCOLAR (Lepidocybium Flavobruneum) This two species are very frequent in El Hierro. The Oilfish is caught all over the year, whereas the Escolar rather prefers the summer months. Both can only be caught during the nights because only then they leave the depth of about 1000 metres to approach the water surface. Both species are very good fighters, especially in light tackle. At the moment we hold the world record for the Escolar in all tackles. The fishing for Escolar and Oilfish is a nice and different experience offered in El Hierro.
![]() MALFARA This shark lives on the bottom of the sea (between 400 and 600 metres). He can grow very big, up to more than 600 kg and 5 metres in length. If you decide on a whole week fishing with us, the chance to catch one is very big. The record that we hold at the moment is 390kg - but we look for more… BLUE MARLIN The challenge for every fisherman. In El Hierro you find the Blue Marlin from may to september. The Marlins found here have an average weight of 500 lbs, the record of the professional fishermen is 810 lbs. 1999 Javier Esquivel and Tim Choate (art marine) had in 4 days a daily strike about 500 lbs. The fishing is starting 5 minutes after leaving the harbour. Our boat is equipped with a tube for skipjack. Also we organize trips to La Gomera, where in september 1999 a marlin of 1100 lbs was caught. Take this challenge in the southernst point of Europe! For more information about these fishes you can look into the Internet by searching for the Latin name. |
