El Hierro - the smallest of the Canarian Islands is situated at the very end of the Southwest of Europe. With its picturesque combination of volcanoes, the green of the forests and mountains, which go up to more than 1000 meters, it fascinates everybody. El Hierro is 227 km² large and has 8000 inhabitants. In the Southwest of the island the gulf-stream is passing and in the South you find the so-called "Calm Sea". It derives its name from the very deep water near the coast protected by the steep mountains which prevent the wind from blowing nearly all over the year.
